Melancholy is like a dark cloak that wraps around your shoulders and at the same time provides a calm warmth. On his new EP “Still Life Of A Hand”, Leander shows a transformation: the introspective, delicate songs have not lost their heaviness, but they are opening up – letting in air and hope. Where the previous EP “Abstract Desperation” still circled in dense, sometimes gloomy worlds of sound, the new tracks unfold with a warming clarity.
The sound remains gentle and well thought-out: acoustic guitar or piano and subtle electronic elements carry Leander’s voice, which tells of change and reflection with an unusual tenderness. “Bike Ride Home”, for example, hovers between melancholy and departure, while “Duo” conducts a quiet dialog – with itself, with a counterpart, with a construct that is beginning to falter.
The EP “Still Life Of A Hand” also reflects an examination of the gender role in which Leander grew up, which has shaped him, but which he also questions and seeks to deconstruct. What does it mean to love, to really be there, to be truly vulnerable and fragile and not to hide behind patriarchal structures? These questions run through his music, sometimes subtly, sometimes explicitly, but always in search of support.
Musically, there are subtle parallels to artists such as Nick Drake or Sufjan Stevens, but Leander goes his own way. It is music that does not impose itself, but leaves room – for thoughts, for doubt, for change. Music that shows: Fragility and strength are not opposites, but two sides of the same movement
